Many names for a plant may indicate different communities that notice and use it, wider geographic distributions or various roles it plays in different ecologies and human societies.
Lobostemon fruticosus has several Afrikaans names in areas where the plant grows in habitat. They include agtdaegeneesbos (bush that heals within eight days), luibos (lazy bush) and douwurmbos (ringworm bush). The names indicate uses for skin conditions such as burns, sores, etc., occurring in the old Cape traditional medicine.
The plant grows on sandy flats on the west coast from Namaqualand to the Cape Peninsula and in the southern Cape (Van Wyk and Gericke, 2000; Bean and Johns, 2005).
