Old inflorescences of Bulbine abyssinica may present last gasp flowers at the top of the raceme while already holding a cylinder of spaced, ovoid fruit capsules on sturdy green pedicels below. Overprovision favours success; this is not frugal or just-in-time management.

The green capsules are here mostly covered in dry, brown floral remains. Protective covers deny the elements up to a point.

Flowering happens in late spring or summer after rain (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Shearing and Van Heerden, 2008; Blundell, 1992; iSpot).
