The long-living Clivia miniata var. miniata is for many gardeners the number one member of its genus. The ample cluster of individually stalked flowers brighten their shady spots annually, often without fail, heralding the end of winter.

In picture the pale, club-shaped bud cluster indicates that the rhizome has split, cloning an offset, i.e. vegetatively producing a second plant of the same genetic composition as the original.

Clivias should be watered in the flowering season and do not mind drying out somewhat for a few months when in rest. The plants are sometimes attacked by lily borer caterpillars.
